CENTRE:   Centre girls take two victories into break

The Centre High School girls basketball team won two games this past week, finishing the week with an overall record of 3-3.

The young team showed its talent by defeating Elyria Dec. 14, 40-39, and Canton Galva Friday, 48-42.

Centre’s one-point victory over Elyria was won on a free throw by Cacey Simons with eight seconds remaining in the game.

Simons had a good night, scoring a team-high 18 points, followed by Allison Shields with 11 points.

A victory was in doubt in the third quarter after Elyria wiped out a 6-point Centre lead and surged ahead by 10 points, 33-23.

A 3-point shot by Bryanna Svoboda and a field goal by Simons narrowed the gap to five, 33-28, by the end of the quarter.

A field goal and free throw by Shields less than three minutes into the fourth quarter tied the game at 33-33.

The game was tied at 39-39 when Simons was fouled and provided the winning free throw.

Other scorers were Genesis Rudolph, 5 points, Anna Weber, 2, and Beka Basore, 1.

The junior varsity also had a winning night. They defeated Elyria, 24-18, in two quarters.

Coming from a 5-4 deficit in the first quarter, the Lady Cougars turned it on in the second to outscore the Lady Eagles 20-13 for the victory.

Amy Makovec scored 8 points, Basore, 6, Cassandra Dones and Rudolph, 4 each, and Theo Kassebaum, 2.

Canton-Galva

Shields led the Lady Cougars to victory Friday, scoring 18 points against Canton-Galva.

Shields and Simons combined for 7 points in the first quarter to give Centre a 2-point lead over the Lady Eagles.

Two 3-point goals by Rudolph and 1 by Svoboda helped the Lady Cougars to an 18-13 lead at halftime.

Centre outscored Canton-Galva 16-9 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 12 points.

However, the Lady Eagles provided a surprising ending in the fourth quarter as they outscored Centre, adding 20 points including four 3-pointers. The Lady Cougars were lucky to walk away with a 6-point victory.

In addition to Shields’ 18 points, Rudolph scored 9, Simons 8, Svoboda 5, Ellie Miller 4, and Kassebaum and Ashley Jensen, two each.
