Centre honor students conduct supply drive for soldiers

Centre High School National Honor Society is sponsoring a community drive this month to collect items for care packages to be sent to Ft. Riley’s Bravo Company while they are deployed. Collection boxes have been placed in classrooms and throughout the community.

Suggested donations are powdered drink mixes, gum, commercially prepared granola bars, nuts, beef jerky, trail mix, magazines, and holiday decorations — Christmas lights, garland, and mini Christmas trees.

Centre has been in a partnership with the battalion for a couple of years, which has involved visits of students to the base and soldiers to the school. In an effort to stay connected to students while deployed, the soldiers have requested correspondence about activities, accomplishments, athletic events, and other happenings at school.

Students hope to send groups of packages several times throughout the year to the soldiers. The deadline for the first shipment is Nov. 30 with the next shipment planned for early next year.

NHS students sponsoring the drive are Ally Basore, Dylan Deines, Whitney Gutsch, Carissa Shields, Abigail Svoboda, and Kristin Vinduska, with sponsor Cindy Wyatt. Any questions may be directed to Jill Day or Wyatt at (785) 983-4321.
