Centre lengthens days, shortens year

Staff writer

The 2009-10 school calendar for Centre USD 397 will be five days shorter than a normal year, a total of 183 days including 174 student contact days.

The student school year will run from Aug. 20 to May 21. Each full day will begin at 8:18 a.m. and end at 3:35 p.m., adding 10 minutes.

The board approved the calendar Monday. The changes are subject to a letter of understanding between the board and teachers’ union, which states the shortened contract is for one year only.

Except for natural movement on the salary schedule, teachers will not get a pay increase for the 2009-10 school year.

Superintendent/K-4 principal Jerri Kemble and 5-12 principal Nadine Smith will receive $300 each toward professional association memberships and will be given ownership of their laptops.

The board approved a list of classified personnel, which remains the same except the K-4 custodian position, which was left open. In a separate action, the board approved Bob Mueller as transportation director, with compensation to be determined later.

A list of supplemental duties also was approved. Positions deleted were senior high assistant pep club/cheerleader sponsor, K-4 head teacher, and 5-12 head teacher. Junior and senior high pep club/cheerleader sponsors will receive 3 percent of base, and golf coach compensation will increase to 8 percent, the same as other head coaches.

Assistant coach positions were left open and will be filled based on the number of athletes involved in each sport.

New assignments include Lynley Remy, K-12 vocal and instrumental music; Tyler Weinbrenner, junior high boys’ coach; and Deb Wiles, junior high girls’ coach.

The board accepted the resignations of Christa Crable as assistant cook at the high school, Remy as junior class sponsor, and Jeanne Rziha as school nurse.

At Chris Waclawik’s request, the board reduced summer music lessons from 10 days to five.

The board approved a final resolution to not renew Pat Schoenhofer’s contract.

The board approved application for $18,178 of federal stimulus money, to be used to provide staff development for teachers of Title I students through the integration of technology into the district’s standards-based curriculum. Title I provides help for students in math and science.

How the money could be used was stipulated by the federal government.

In other action, the board:

  • Approved purchase of technology equipment from Tech Depot for $4,274.12.
  • Approved pay for Briana Methvin’s emergency leave on May 8 to assist her parents after a tornado struck their home.
  • Appointed Terry Deines as representative to Marion County Special Education Cooperative.
  • Authorized Mueller to seek bids on a used 59-to-65-passenger bus with a Bluebird chassis.
  • Approved enrollment in student accident insurance including extended catastrophic coverage for a premium of $5,015.
  • Approved Future Business Leaders of America and FFA activities for 2009-10.
  • Authorized the board clerk to make all needed year-end transfers.

Kemble presented certificates of appreciation to Jennifer Kassebaum and Julie Klenda for their eight years of service on the board. Their terms will end June 30.
