Centre receives grant to encourage healthy eating

The Centre school district has received $1,000 from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation for programs and activities aimed at improving students’ health.

The Healthy Habits for Life grant was one of 159 distributed to schools in 66 counties.

School nurse Debra Casey said the money would be used to teach kindergarten through 12th grade students about good nutrition and healthy snacking.

Kate Basore hopes to use some of the money to facilitate achieving her Girl Scouts Gold Award project.

Casey, also Centre Girl Scouts leader, said Basore would introduce information about the best foods to eat prior to physical activity.

A “nutrition trivia” game will be developed for use at all grade levels, Casey said.
