Centre students receive awards

After a potluck supper May 15 at Centre High School, staff members presented numerous scholarships and other awards to students.

Sponsor Cindy Riedel announced new National Honor Society officers. They are Tom Oborny, president; Carrie Carlson, vice president; Makenzie Deines, secretary; Justin Deines, treasurer, and Ty Simons, student council representative.

New NHS members are junior Justin Deines and sophomores Makenzie Deines, Amy Makovec, Timothy Vinduska, Kyle Methvin, Chad Mueller, Cacey Simons, Ty Simons, and Grant Srajer.

Theo Kassebaum and Shane Methvin received numerous local and state awards and scholarships. Both were named Kansas Honor Scholars by the University of Kansas and were Board of Regents curriculum completers. Kassebaum was selected as the outstanding senior in math and science by Kansas State University.

Dani Spohn received the Principal’s Leadership Award.

At least 38 students received scholastic achievement awards for earning cumulative grade point averages of 3.25 or above in three quarters and no Ds.

Certificates of excellence were presented to athletes with exemplary character in each sport. These were Methvin, football; Beka Basore, volleyball and girls’ basketball; Grant Srajer, boys’ basketball and track; Kassebaum, track; Kodey Johnson, golf; and Courtney Hett, cheerleading.

Girls’ basketball coach Alan Stahlecker presented outstanding achievement certificates to the 2011-12 team for their advancement to the state tournament.

As track coach, Stahlecker announced that Kassebaum was the leading scorer on the Centre track team all four years in high school.

Scholarships

Memorial scholarships were presented in honor of James Weber, Bob Kleinschmidt, and Bud Peterson. Tampa State Bank presented a $1,000 scholarship to Dani Spohn of Tampa.

Tahnicca Lewis: Butler Community College Activity.

Spohn: Tampa State Bank, Butler Community College Activity, Tri-County Telephone, Centre FFA Alumni, Centre FFA Leadership, Marion County Farm Bureau, James Weber Memorial.

Kinsley Shoup: Martin Methodist College, Thomas Martin Leadership.

Methvin: Centre Education Foundation, Centre FFA Leadership, James Weber Memorial FFA, Centre FFA Alumni, Leo S. Jirak Memorial, Marion County Farm Bureau, Mowrer, Weber Memorial.

Trevor Hageberg: Activity from Kansas State University, Centre Education Foundation, Kleinschmidt Memorial.

Kassebaum: National FFA Award from Ford Motor Co., Michael and Elisabeth Evancho, Centre FFA Alumni; Mowrer, Bud Peterson Memorial, Merit Academic from the University of Chicago.

Cassandra Dones: Marion County Senior Citizens, Academic Excellence from McPherson College.

Zach Calvert: First Baptist Church of Herington.
