Centre takes 3rd in league

The Centre volleyball team placed third Saturday in the league tournament at Centre by defeating Solomon in two sets, 25-18 and 25-19.

The team advanced out of pool play with two victories. The first was against Little River, and the second against Peabody-Burns. They were defeated by Goessel, which swept the tournament.

In two close contests, Centre lost in the semi-finals to Rural Vista in two sets, 25-23 and 26-24.

In the final match against Solomon, Brenna Shields served for 11 points, and Summer Espinoza served for 6.

Shelby Makovec, Espinoza, and Shelby Pankratz were perfect in setting the ball.

Shields completed 12-of-15 spike attempts, including 3 kills. Espinoza had 13 spikes and 5 kills. Pankratz was 7-of-10 with 2 kills; Benning 6-of-7, with 3 kills and 2 blocks; Makovec 4-of-4, with 1 kill and 1 block; and Kate Basore, 3-of-3.

Heading into substate Saturday at Hartford, the Centre Lady Cougars have an overall record of 15-13.
