Centre teachers get extra day to prepare for transition

Superintendent recognized for 25 years in education

Staff writer

May 20 will be the last day of classes for the 2009-10 year at Centre schools.

Originally set for May 21, the date was changed by the board of education at its Monday meeting to give teachers an extra work day to pack supplies and prepare for the transition from two sites to one this fall. Teachers also have a work day on May 24.

The 2010-11 school calendar approved by the board sets Aug. 19 as the first day of classes and May 19 as the last. Thanksgiving break is scheduled for Nov. 24 through 26, Christmas vacation Dec. 22 through Dec. 3, and spring break March 21 through 25.

The schedule includes 173 student days, 1½ days of parent/teacher conferences, and 8½ days of staff development and work days.

The board voted to continue several summer activities that had been considered for elimination as cost-savings measures. These included transportation from Centre High School to Herington for summer swimming lessons, using one bus; transportation from the high school to the Healthy Self camp at Herington; and the summer weights program.

Tenured teachers whose contracts were renewed for the next school year are Lisa Beye, Jean Brunner, Marci Cain, Cary Granzow, Carol Hanschu, Gail Lorson, Jennifer Montgomery, Karen Nickel, Janis Peterson, Lynley Remy, Cynthia Riedel, Tana Riffel, Peggy Shortridge, Kelly Steiner, Megan Stuchlik, Candace Tajchman, Laura Vinduska, Lacy Wallace, Deb Wiles, and Greg Wyatt.

Briana Methvin was renewed as newly tenured, and Laura Klenda and Tyler Weinbrenner were renewed as non-tenured.

The board gave final approval to a resolution to nonrenew the contract for Susan Carlson for the 2010-11 school year.

The initial decision was made at a special meeting April 28 after the board spent almost 40 minutes in executive session with Superintendent Jerri Kemble and Principal Nadine Smith.

Other business

In other business, the board:

  • Approved the purchase of 30 MacBooks and five iMac desktops, one projector, two flat screen TVs, and six document cameras for an approximate cost of $36,000.
  • Approved a right of way easement agreement with Tri-County Telephone Association to install fiber lines on the Mowrer property.
  • Authorized removal of a wall between two bedrooms at the district-owned house at the high school site to provide more space for office equipment. The house is being converted into the district central office.
  • Accepted the resignation of Tyler Weinbrenner as assistant high school basketball coach.
  • Approved the establishment of a Centre Education Foundation scholarship.
  • Approved Mowrer Scholarship awards.

Board president Brent Methvin presented Kemble with a certificate of recognition from the State Board of Education for 25 years in the teaching profession.

The board has been wrestling for several months with what to do about warping and spreading of floor boards in the northeast corner of the new gym. They would like to determine what is causing moisture to accumulate under the floor before spending a lot of money to replace it.

Kemble submitted a bid from Lankford Enterprises to repair the floor at a cost of $17,400. A vote to accept the bid failed, 3-4.

Board members will seek to find answers to the problem and revisit the issue at the June meeting. Kemble presented a list of budget savings the district has made for the 2010-11 school year, totaling $94,544.
