Centre teams get workout against SES

Staff writer

Playing against 3A Southeast of Saline Friday in pre-season games at home, the boys and girls basketball teams from Centre High School found themselves up against strong opponents.

The mismatches led to defeat for both teams, but it was a good warm-up leading to the pre-season tournament this week at Herington.

Girls

The girls were defeated, 57-22. Bryanna Svoboda was knocked out of the game by an injury in the first quarter, putting a dent in the Lady Cougars’ offense. They trailed 24-4 at the end of the quarter, and it was downhill from there.

Beka Basore was the only player to find success at the basket. She scored 10 points. Other scorers were Amy Makovec and Makenzie Deines, three points each; and Shelby Makovec, Brenna Shields, and Cacey Simons, two points each.

The junior varsity fared somewhat better. They were defeated, 34-28. Leading scorers were Shields, 10 points, and Jasmin Abdel Ghany with six.

Boys

The boys were defeated, 67-34. Two seniors did not play. Facing a taller SES team, Centre trailed, 18-4, at the end of the first quarter, and added 30 points by the end of the game.

Ty Simons scored almost half of Centre’s points with 15. He scored three of the four Centre free throws. James Wyatt, Shane Methvin, and Kyle Methvin scored four points each, Kodey Johnson, three, and Grant Srajer and Justin Deines, two each.

Wyatt was the leading rebounder, with four each defensively and offensively. Srajer provided three assists.
