It was a good day Friday for Centre High School at the 1A regional track meet in Burlington. With the top four finishers in each event qualifying for the state track meet Friday and Saturday in Wichita, Centre qualified nine athletes in seven events.

“This is the most athletes and events we have qualified for in several years,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “I was very pleased with the way our athletes competed for top placings.”

Senior graduate Theo Kassebaum will be returning to state competition for the third consecutive year. She finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.6 seconds. She placed eighth at state in 2010 and seventh in 2011 in that event.

Kassebaum also qualified to compete in the 300 hurdles, finishing fourth with a time of 54.2. She just missed qualifying in long jump, finishing fifth at 15 feet, 8 inches.

Freshman Shelby Makovec placed third in both distance races: 5 minutes, 57.1 seconds in the 1,600 and 13:26.4 in the 3,200.

Junior Houston Svoboda qualified in the boys’ 100, finishing fourth with a time of 12.1.

The boys’ and girls’ 4x100 relay teams both finished in fourth place. The girls’ team members are Cacey Simons, Ellie Miller, Kassebaum, and Brenna Shields. The boys’ team members are Grant Srajer, Justin Deines, Conner Montgomery, and Svoboda.
