Centre volleyball bows out at substate

The Centre Lady Cougars volleyball team saw its season come to an end Saturday at Lebo, but not without first advancing to the semifinals with a hard-fought win over Peabody-Burns.

The two Wheat State League teams squared off in a match between the substate’s two lowest-seeded teams, but seedings didn’t matter in this one.

Centre looked to be on the ropes early as the Lady Warriors streaked to a 10-2 lead. But Emily Schlesener and Grace Knepp collected kills in a run to cut the lead to 10-7.

Peabody-Burns was up 17-10 when Centre started chipping away. Schlesener had a huge block to knot the score at 20, and Kate Basore connected on a kill to put the Lady Cougars up by 2, 22-20. Peabody-Burns came out of a time out to tie the game again at 22, but with Samantha Espinoza serving Centre claimed a 25-22 win.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair, with the Lady Cougars leading but unable to put Peabody-Burns away until an Espinoza kill ignited a 6-point run for a 23-15 cushion. Basore closed out the 25-17 win with a too-hot-to-handle serve.

Centre wasn’t an easy out for top-seeded Rural Vista in the semifinals, but the Lady Cougars lost 25-26, 25-18 to close out the season with a 6-24 record.
