CENTRE:   Centre wins Hope triangular

Lady Cougars finish fourth at Herington Invitational

Centre High School volleyball team improved its record to 5-10 Sept. 22 by winning both matchups at a Hope triangular.

The league games were welcome after facing tougher competition the past two weekends.

Centre defeated White City in two games. The Lady Cougars won the first game easily, 25-12. The team was excellent from the serving line, completing 24-of-25.

Carlye Simons led the way with eight points, followed by Anna Weber with six.

The second game was a lot closer. Centre won by two points, 25-23.

Allison Shields completed 11-of-15 spikes and eight kills for the match. Shelby Deines was 100 percent in setting, with 5-of-5. Marler was 9-of-11.

Centre defeated Hope, 25-16 and 25-19. At 46-of-48, team serving was strong. Anna Weber served for 10 points including three aces, and Ellie Miller served for seven.

Shields again was strong at the net, completing 10-of-11 spike attempts, including four kills. Weber, a freshman, provided three spikes, one kill, and four blocks.

Herington Invitational

The fifth-seeded team had a good showing Saturday at the Herington Invitational. They finished in fourth place.

The Lady Cougars finished 2-1 in pool play to advance to the semifinals.

They defeated Wakefield and White City, but lost to Clay Center.

They lost to Sacred Heart in the semifinals, 7-25, 22-25, and to Wichita Sunrise Academy, 10-25, 17-25, in the consolation game.

Freshmen Weber and Miller were big contributors during the tournament with quickness at the net. Sophomore Theo Kassebaum also got good playing time.

The team’s overall record after the tournament was 7-13.
