Centre wins in third quarter mercy rule

The Centre High School football team scored 44 points Friday in its homecoming game against Cedar Vale/Dexter before the Spartans got on the scoreboard near the end of the first half.

The game was cut short in the third quarter due to the 45-point rule after Centre scored two more unanswered touchdowns for a 56-6 victory.

Justin Deines scored two touchdowns on passes from quarterback Kyle Methvin and another on a 25-yard interception return. Methvin and Houston Svoboda ran for two touchdowns each. Chad Mueller scored the final touchdown.

Centre had 31 carries for 174 yards, and Dexter had 21 carries for 88 yards. Centre had 82 yards passing and Dexter had 14 yards passing.

Methvin was the leading rusher with 12 carries for 79 yards, followed by Svoboda with eight carries for 64 yards. Methvin also passed for another 62 yards, all of those received by Deines.

With a record of 3-3, Centre plays Hartford at home Friday.
