Charges being deliberated in Puttroff accident

Charges have yet to be filed against the driver of a vehicle that struck and seriously injured bicyclist Fred Puttroff of Marion in August, but sheriff Robert Craft said multiple charges are being considered.

“There will be charges, but I’m not sure what yet,” Craft said. “I can’t say what charges until they are filed. We’re discussing with (county attorney) Susan Robson what other charges she wants to work with.”

Craft said it is common with serious accidents for there to be a lag between the incident and the filing of formal charges, particularly when the potential exists for multiple charges.

“It’s always slow so that the county attorney, prosecuting attorney, and law enforcement are together on what the charges should be,” he said. “We want to make the correct charges, rather than rush in and write a ticket that precludes further court issues.”

Craft declined to say when formal charges might be filed.
