CENTRE:   CHS athletes set personal records at meet

Staff writer

Although the Centre High School track teams were not among the top finishers in the first Wheat State League track meet Thursday at Goessel, many personal records were set.

“I expect our athletes to be competing at their very best at this time of the year, and they did not disappoint in this way,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “Particularly our younger athletes had many season-best performances.”

Stahlecker said the boys 4x100 relay team — Grant Srajer, Justin Deines, Chad Mueller, and Houston Svoboda — had the most surprising performance as they came into the meet with the sixth fastest time and finished third.

Freshman Cacey Simons was the leading scorer for the day with 23 points. She also established the league record of 28.8 seconds in the 200 preliminaries. That mark was matched in the finals by the winner of the event from Wakefield.

Hope won the boys meet and Little River won the girls meet.

Centre will compete Friday at the 1A regional meet in Burlington, hosted by Southern Coffey County.

“We hope to qualify several athletes for the state meet,” Stahlecker said.
