In a repeat of last year’s performance, Centre High School golf team was runner-up in the 1A regional golf meet Monday at Marion. Centre hosted the event.

Led by junior Heath Hill, five of the six team members finished in the top 15 among 31 competitors. Hill scored 81 in 18 holes, behind Tommy Smith of Hartford, who shot 79.

Sophomore Tyler Klenda was sixth with 88, junior Jacob Jennings 11th with 95, sophomore Adam Matz 13th with 97, and senior Kacey Hanschu 15th with 103.

The team scored 361, behind Frankfort with 357 and ahead of Centralia with 409. Linn had a score of 424, and Hartford had 437.

The team will play Tuesday in the state golf tournament at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney. The Cougars placed seventh of 12 at state in 2008. Four of this year’s members were on the team. Medalists were Hill, 17th, and Klenda, 20th.

“Our boys spend a lot of time practicing,” said Coach Greg Wyatt. “We were hoping to win the regional tournament, but we are ready to contend for the state championship.”
