CHS recognizes students for excellence at dinner

Following a community potluck supper May 11 at Centre High School, teachers recognized students for excellence in academic and athletic performance.

Junior Allison Shields and sophomores Shane Methvin and Theo Kassebaum became new members of the National Honor Society. They joined Cole Svoboda, Jacob Jirak, Josie Peterson, Tyler Klenda, Brian Burhoop, and Carlye Simons in reading the NHS pledge.

Scholarships

Several area scholarships for seniors were announced.

Bob Kleinschmidt memorial — Simons.

Leo Jirak memorial — Shelby Deines.

James Weber memorial — Quentin Wacker and Deines.

MachineTools.com James Weber memorial — Trevor Troutt.

Centre Education Foundation — Simons.

Tampa State Bank – Deines.

Penwell-Gable Funeral Home, Herington — Deines.

St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary, Marion — Simons.

Loren E. and Clara Mowrer awards (through proceeds from the district-owned Mowrer farm) —Peterson, Simons, Wacker, and Jacob Jennings.

Tri-County Telephone — Stephen Kaiser.

Students received other awards too numerous to mention.

Athletic awards

Students who participated in athletics were recognized by their coaches and the Centre Parent Teacher Organization.

Awards sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps recognized Simons for scholastic excellence and Troutt as distinguished athlete.

Awards sponsored by the U.S. Army Reserve named Simons and Heath Hill as scholar athletes.

In an honor sponsored by the Kansas State High School Activities Association, one student from each school sport was selected for exhibiting exemplary sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity.

They were Troutt, football; Carrie Carlson, volleyball; Rustyn Kerbs, boys basketball; Allison Shields, girls basketball; Peterson, girls track; Svoboda, boys track; Adam Matz, golf; and Katie Remy, cheerleading.
