Troutt placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 145 feet Friday at the state track meet in Wichita.
Centre High School senior track and field athlete Trevor Troutt competed in the state tournament as a sophomore in 2008, but he did not place.
“I was pretty pumped about that,” he said.
The left-handed thrower missed the state meet last year after hurting his back lifting weights.
He also finished 13th in the shot put with a throw of 42-9.5.
Troutt said he overcame his nerves for the best discus throw of his career Friday. He said his hands shake and his palms sweat interfering with his grip before his throw.
The individual nature of track and field events adds pressure. Troutt was a standout on Cougar basketball and football teams in his senior season; he said having teammates takes away some of the individual burden.
Troutt overcame the pressure by tapping into his competitive nature.
“It cleared my mind,” Troutt said. “I stepped up.”
