City offers summer job opportunities

Marion city council handled a laundry list of routine items at Monday’s meeting.

Parks and Recreation director Margo Yates told council members seasonal workers, such as mowers, will be allowed to work outside of the department’s traditional hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Having only daytime hours limits the work force,” city administrator Roger Holter said.

The department plans to hire six to eight part-time workers for evening and weekend hours. Applications are now being accepted.

Mayor Todd Heitschmidt acknowledged Marion City Library’s 5-star award with a mayoral proclamation.

Resident Gene Winkler and PRIDE member Margaret Wilson told council members the group want to replace a community sign at Elm and Main Sts. with an electronic sign closer to downtown.

Heitschmidt suggested the group make a presentation to the Parks and Recreation board for their input.

In other matters, council members:

• Instructed staff to investigate other opportunities to finance the waterline project.
• Approved a bid from for roof repairs for the city building.
• Electronic smoking devices were added to the city vehicle use smoking prohibition.
• Declined to renew a KPTS donation.
• Voted to remove a residential water meter on land sold to the Airport Land Improvement district #2.
