The 1A Centre Junior High School boys’ basketball teams faced long odds Monday as they squared off against 3A Marion Middle School in the opening games of the season.

Playing on the home court, the varsity Cougars were defeated, 47-19. They had a difficult time finding the basket, trailing in all four quarters, 12-5, 18-7, 12-3, and 15-4, respectively.

Jordan Hett of Marion was a standout, scoring 19 points by himself.

Kendall Harding and Kyle Methvin of Centre scored four points each. Kodey Johnson and Justin Deines scored three points each. Other contributors were James Wyatt and Dylan Svitak, two each, and Ty Simons, one.

The B-team was defeated, 37-15. They outscored Marion 9-5 in the fourth quarter but finished with a 22-point loss.

Simons, Houston Svoboda, Methvin, Karl Riffel, Chad Mueller, and Jerami Slayden scored two points each, and Johnson scored three.
