Clayton L. Strome

Clayton L. Strome, 88, of Herington died Jan. 3, 2012, at Herington Municipal Hospital.

He was born Sept. 30, 1923, on a farm southeast of Abilene to John C. and Elizabeth C. (Biehler) Strome.

He attended Chapman High School. He stopped after his junior year to help on the family farm while his brothers served in World War II. He worked for Anderson-Oxandale, which became part of Hamm Quarries in 1972, and retired from Aggregate Productions in 2009.

He married Mildred M. Barnett on Dec. 19, 1954, in Fredonia’s Presbyterian parsonage.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred of the home; three sons, Jim Strome and Rob Strome, both of Herington, and John J. Strome of Manhattan; 11 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Everett, Lewis, John H., and Lyle Strome; a sister, Estella Vessels; an infant granddaughter, Erica Lea Strome; and his parents.

A funeral was held Monday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, with the Rev. Troy Slater officiating. Burial was at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
