CMBS to hold genealogy workshop Nov. 5

The Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies at Tabor College will hold its second genealogy seminar at 10 a.m. Nov. 5 in the Tabor library conference room.

“We were overwhelmed by the positive response of our initial seminar last spring and have decided to create a series of workshops as a result,” director of CMBS Peggy Goertzen said.

The event will focus on various aspects of German Mennonite genealogy. Workshop goers do not have to have attended the first session to find the series helpful.

Steve Fast will present “Deciphering Printed German Text and Handwritten Gothic Script.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring personal examples and materials they would like to work on, such as letters, postcards, pages from a family Bible or poems and songs as examples of artifacts that might be used in the workshop

“Our hope is that these sessions will help individuals preserve and share their own history,” Goertzen said. “We have been thrilled with the interest and enthusiasm from the Mennonite community and beyond to other German and Russian descendants.”

The workshop is expected to last about an hour. The cost of the session is $15.

Those interested may RSVP by Nov. 3 to Goertzen by calling (620) 947-3121 ext. 1211 e-mailing peggyg@tabor.edu
