Dallke concerned about giving too much power to remove homes

Marion County Commission discussed proposed planning and zoning rule changes Dec. 22 and requested a planning board member discuss the proposed changes.
Planning/zoning and environmental health director Bobbi Strait said the planning board had a public hearing Dec. 8 to propose the changes to the county’s zoning rules.
One proposed change would give the planning commission the authority to order the removal of any mobile home that is nonconforming and noncompliant and either deemed uninhabitable or unoccupied for six months or more.
Commissioner Randy Dallke said the proposal worried him. He said the ability to remove a mobile home that is uninhabitable didn’t bother him, but unoccupied did.
“I think we’re going one step too far,” Dallke said.
Commissioner Dan Holub requested Strait ask a member of the planning board to attend a county commission meeting to discuss the proposed changes before the commission takes action.
In other business:
- Commission went into executive session with road and bridge superintendent John Summerville for 10 minutes to discuss the purchase of land for a right-of-way. No action was taken on return to open session.
- Summerville was asked to bring bids for an oil burner and a tree saw for a skid steer at Monday’s meeting because of budget constraints for the remainder of 2008.
- The commission voted to extend the deadline for the neighborhood revitalization plan for Robert and Frelna Crawford at 553 N. Walnut, Marion. The deadline was Dec. 31, 2008, and the commission extended it one year.
