Concerts by Bucky Covington, T. Graham Brown, Kebo Cyrus, and locals The Greenhorns are expected to benefit other events at Marion County Fair, fair board member Chuck McLinden told Marion County commissioners Friday.

Marion County Fire Chiefs’ Association is organizing the concerts July 29 through 31. The fair’s signature event, a demolition derby, will be Aug. 1.

McLinden expects some concertgoers to return for the derby.

“It’s good to see us pooling our resources,” commission Chairman Dan Holub said.

Sheriff Rob Craft said he was waiting for a response from Kansas Highway Patrol about extra police at the events.

In other business:

• Sales tax receipts through May were up 5.9 percent over the same time in 2008.
• Commissioners tentatively approved preparation of bid specifications for chip-sealing 28 miles of county roads. Preparing bid sepcifications would cost about $6,000 Road and Bridge Superintendent John Summerville said. Kirkland-Michael Engineers of Ellsworth will prepare the specifications.
• Ronald and Shelly Hardy of Marion received permission for a June 6 fireworks display at 1994 Sunflower Road in honor of their children’s graduations from college and technical school.
• Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro won a bid for 6,550 gallons of fuel. Co-op’s bid was $11,480. Cardie Oil of Tampa bid $11,724.
• Commissioners met in secret session for five minutes to discuss personnel.
• Hett Construction of Marion will repair a concrete floor at Marion County Transfer Station. Hett proposed replacing a 13-by-15 foot section of the floor, with rebar every 6 inches for $3,640. Jantz Construction of Tampa proposed replacing a 16-by-20 foot area with rebar every 16 inches for $3,136.
• Commissioners will meet with Chase County commissioners June 8 to discuss replacing a bridge on a shared road.
