Cougars 2-0 in district play
Staff writer
In an exciting homecoming game Friday under cloudy, cold, and drizzly skies, the Centre Cougars defeated Tescott, 28-26. They are 2-0 in district play.
Tescott turned the ball over three times on downs in the first half. The Trojans were left scoreless, while the Cougars scored 14 points.
Conner Montgomery scored Centre’s first touchdown in its first possession with an 8-yard run. The conversion attempt failed.
Centre threw an interception as the second quarter began, but the Cougars got the ball back and went on to score again on a 1-yard run by Dakota Stimpson. The extra-point attempt was good, and Centre led, 14-0.
The second half proved to be a different story. Tescott made three touchdowns in the third quarter. Centre scored on a 73-yard kick return by Stimpson, but Tescott led, 22-20.
Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter until almost the one-minute mark, when Cole Methvin caught a 6-yard pass from Stimpson for the winning touchdown. Stimpson ran for the conversion, and Centre walked away with a 6-point victory. Tescott outdid Centre in rushing and receiving, but that did not affect the outcome of the game.
Most of Centre’s yardage was gained on the ground. Montgomery, Max Svoboda, and Stimpson combined for 38 carries and 215 yards. Stimpson threw 3 completed passes for 20 yards. Montgomery intercepted a ball for 5 yards. Svoboda, Dylan Deines, Methvin, Brendon Bina, and Justin Bina were leading tacklers.
The Cougars will play Chase on the road Friday in their third district game.
