County approves HVAC contract for jail building

Staff writer

Marion County Commission approved a contract with KVK of Woodbine for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning maintenance for the jail.

The county will pay $860 quarterly for maintenance, primarily on the boiler.

County Clerk Carol Maggard said the contract includes the cost of parts.

Commissioner Randy Dallke asked whether the county would save money by replacing the boiler. A concern was whether it was worth paying for a new system in a building that needs to be replaced.

In other business:

  • John and Cathy Wilson of Wichita again asked the commission to waive $241 in penalties on delinquent taxes. The commissioners decided to confer later with Treasurer Jeannine Bateman.
  • Maggard said the county’s worker compensation premiums were $113,208, significantly less than the $155,000 the county budgeted.
  • Commissioners agreed to pay $8 an hour for a new part-time clerical worker in the sheriff’s office.
  • Health Administrator Diedre Serene said a homeland security exercise would be conducted March 22-28. The exercise will practice mass dispersal of medication.
  • Commissioners voted to encumber $488,123 from the 2008 budget in 2009. The encumbered funds were approved for specific purchases, but the purchases weren’t completed in 2008, Maggard said.
  • The county received $576,228 in sales tax revenue in 2008, up from $544,491 in 2007.
  • The commission met in closed session with Road and Bridge Superintendent John Summerville to discuss personnel. No action was taken afterward.
  • Kansas Association of Counties dues for 2009 will be $2,455.
