Marion County took a big step Monday toward instituting a countywide recycling program when county commissioners voted 2-1 to approve a contract for recycling with Sonoco of Hutchinson.
County Attorney Susan Robson had reviewed the contract, said Transfer Station Director Rollin Schmidt. Sonoco will pick up recyclables from the transfer station, and the county will be paid a portion of the market price for the goods.
The county will incur a cost of $1,200 for delivery of a baler. At the end of the five-year contract, the county will have the option to purchase the baler.
Marion County will be responsible for collecting and loading the recyclables. The transfer station has a trailer on loan from Harvey County, Schmidt said.
The contract requires the county produce eight tons per month. If the county does not, Sonoco can end the contract and the county would return the baler to Hutchinson.
“We got to give it a try, I think,” Commissioner Bob Hein said.
The commissioners voted 2-1 to approve the contract. Hein and Commission Chairman Dan Holub voted in favor; Commissioner Randy Dallke voted against the contract.
Dallke said he does not like the idea of using a trailer for a drop off program, but he thinks recycling is the right thing to do.
Fuel contract tabled
The commission tabled a proposal to seek bids for an annual diesel contract. Holub said the proposal seemed much simpler at first, but delivery issues complicated the proposal.
“I think it’s a logistical nightmare,” said Road and Bridge Superintendent John Summerville.
In other business:
- Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro was the low bidder for area fuel. Its total bid was $14,709 for 4,500 gallons of diesel, 1,500 gallons of dyed diesel, and 2,000 gallons of unleaded gas. Cardie Oil of Tampa bid $14,858 for the same amounts.
- The commission approved selling .459 acres north of the shop at Pilsen to Laverne Stika for $3,500.
- Summerville met with the commission in closed session for 10 minutes to discuss personnel. No action was taken on return to open session.
