County students sweep competition at engineering expo

At the University of Kansas Engineering Expo Thursday in Lawrence, area students competed and earned recognition for their skills.

Friday, elementary students competed in the Mindstorms robot challenge. The Goessel elementary team of Logan Sterk, Logan Webster, and Caiden Duerksen placed first, followed by Macy Sigel of Marion in second. The Goessel team of Alyssa Boden and Annalise Miller placed third.

The Marion Middle School team of Colin Williams, Christian Becker, and Kylie Dixon also competed in the robot challenge.

Laura Savage from Marion won the egg-drop competition, and students from Marion and Peabody-Burns competed in the water rocket competition.

Marion chess club

Wildcat Chess Club at Marion Middle School will compete at a tournament in Hillsboro Saturday. Drew Helmer, Devin Hamm, Christian Becker, and Larry Ziemmermann have all qualified for state competition March 8 at KU.

Emporia State regional science fair

Goessel High School freshman Lanna Wagner placed first Saturday in the bio-medical/health category of Emporia State University’s regional science fair.

Her experiment, called “So you think you can wash?” also placed second overall in her division. She will take her experiment to state competition April 4 and April 5 at Century II in Wichita.
