Marion County Commission set dates and times for the sale and discharge of fireworks Friday.
Fireworks can be sold until 11 p.m. June 27 through July 3, until midnight July 4, and until 10 p.m. July 5.
Discharging fireworks is permissible until 10 p.m. June 27 through July 1, until 11 p.m. July 2 and 3, until midnight July 4, and until 10 p.m. July 5.
Sales and discharge of fireworks begins at 8 a.m., regardless of the day.
Commissioners chose to allow the sale and discharge of fireworks on July 5 because Independence Day falls on a Sunday, making July 5 a federal holiday.
These regulations only apply in unincorporated areas of the county. Cities can set their own standards, County Clerk Carol Maggard said.
In other business:
- Cardie Oil Company, of Tampa, will sell 14,550 gallons of diesel fuel and unleaded gasoline to Marion County Road and Bridge Department for $32,764. Cooperative Grain and Supply bid $32,937.
- Cardie Oil Company will sell the Road and Bridge Department 143 tires for $45,533, contingent on their bid meeting the county’s specifications. Commissioner Dan Holub requested the department double check the bid because it was so much lower than the highest bid, $71,671 by Kansasland Tire Wholesale, of Wichita. Rod’s Tire and Service, of Hillsboro, bid $49,189, and Becker Tire, of Wichita, bid $55,618. The tires are mostly for trucks and heavy equipment.
- Markley Service, of Marion, will sell the county 20 gallons of the chemical Remedy for $1,070. The chemical is for the Noxious Weed Department’s cost-share program. Ag Service, of Hillsboro, bid $1,172. Cooperative Grain and Supply, of Hillsboro, and Agri Producers Inc., of Tampa, declined to bid.
- Voth Construction, of Goessel, will repair the ceiling and walls of the transfer station office for $1,750. Wiebe Construction, of Tampa, bid $3,395.
- Prairieland Partners, of Marion, will sell two lawn mowers to Marion County for $10,127. The mowers will be used at the courthouse and Marion County Park and Lake. Straub International, of Marion, bid $8,750, but Park and Lake Superintendent Steve Hudson preferred the mowers from Prairieland Partners because their decks are made from heavier gauge metal.
- Navrat’s Office Products, of Emporia, will sell Marion County Health Department a desk for $2,056. Office Plus, of Wichita, bid $2,193, and National Business Furniture, of Milwaukee, bid $2,103.
- Road and Bridge Superintendent Jim Herzet met with commissioners for 20 minutes in closed session to discuss personnel. No action was taken on return to open session.
The next commission meeting will be Monday.
