Couple to celebrate 70th anniversary

Vernon and Arlene Bowers will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary Oct. 5.

Vernon Bowers and Arlene Klein were married Oct. 5, 1956, on Old Settlers Day at Out Savior Lutheran Church, Marion.

They watched the Old Settlers parade in the morning, were married in the afternoon, and went to a football game between Marion and Hillsboro in the evening.

The couple retired in 2001, he as a United Methodist pastor and she as an office manager. They have two children, Linda Elwood of Arkansas City and Troy Bowers of Columbia, Missouri, as well as five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The couple now resides in an independent living apartment at Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton.
