Dangerous prank spurs county to offer reward

Moving construction barracade almost caused accident

Staff writer

Marion County is offering a $500 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of whoever nearly caused an accident by moving barricades into an open road and removing warning lights.

The dangerous prank occurred Wednesday night at 330th and Quail Creek roads, south of Ramona, Commission Chairman Dan Holub said Friday.

Barricades were moved from 330th Road, which is closed for construction, onto Quail Creek Road.

“I can’t believe somebody would do that,” Commissioner Bob Hein said.

Commissioners voted unanimously to offer the reward.

In other business:

  • The speed limit on 330th Road between K-15 and Quail Creek Road and Limestone Road from Tampa to 290th Road was reduced to 45 mph until the roads receive a hard surface. Commissioners made the change to try to alleviate dust and improve safety.
  • Commissioners voted to purchase a 10-bin recycling trailer for $17,050 from Pro-Tainer of Alexandria, Minn. The county recycling program has used a trailer borrowed from Harvey County, but Harvey County wants the trailer back before school starts.
  • Tax receipts for sales in May were $50,271, the largest total for that month since before 2002. Last year the county received $43,053 in May. Commissioner Randy Dallke said he thought the increase is because of increased prices.

The commission will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday to review the 2010 budget.
