A ceremony to dedicate signs marking the Santa Fe Trail in Marion County will take place at 2:30 p.m., Sept. 23, at Cottonwood Crossing Historic Interpretive Kiosk, 1.5 miles west of Durham.

Dignitaries representing the National Park Service, Santa Fe Trail Association, and county government will take part in the ceremony to celebrate the placing of more than 100 signs. Marion County is the first county in which the Santa Fe National Historic Trail “family of signs” has been fully implemented.

Trail signs include “Crosses Here” signs that mark locations where the trail intersects county roads, “Local Tour” signs that designate a driving tour route across the county that takes travelers to 20 sites of historic interest, and “Site Entrance” signs that designate locations of two historic interpretive sites on the Santa Fe Trail. Site entrances in Marion County are the Cottonwood Crossing, 1.5 miles west Durham, and the Lost Springs Station, 2.5 miles west of Lost Springs. A “Historic Trails Information” sign located on Hwy. 56 at the Marion/McPherson county line adjacent to “Stone Marker” commemorating the Santa Fe and Chisholm Trails is part of the family trail signs program.
