Demolition might cause stink

Staff writer

A sewer line underneath the former Florence school might cause a stink when the building is demolished.

County commissioners heard Thursday that an engineer working on a demolition plan for the building discovered a sewer main underneath it.

An old, clay tile pipe lies shallowly beneath the floor. The pipe could be damaged by demolition, but damage to the pipe might be averted by leaving a 10-foot width of the concrete floor in place.

Commissioners decided to entertain alternative bids for replacing the sewer line if it is destroyed.
