IN MEMORIAM:   Doris Penner

Doris Louise Penner, 88, El Dorado, passed away at her home on Friday, July 8, 2016

Doris’ life began on July 22, 1927, in Marion, the daughter of Harry and Edna (Schroer) Dody. She graduated from Marion High School in 1945, and married Harold Lee Penner on Aug. 31, 1948, in Marion. They celebrated 67 years together.

Doris retired as a secretary for USD 490 in El Dorado.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Alpha Leshya Federated Club, United Methodist Women, and bridge clubs.

Doris enjoyed square dancing, care giving, sewing and was a great cook — especially cinnamon rolls! Although having Alzheimer’s the last 10 years, she could still embroider and made 38 sets of tea towels during that time.

Her loving family includes her husband, Harold of the home; daughters Joan Bixler of Topeka amd Jan Umhay and her husband, Bruce, of Mesa, Arizona; brothers Glenn Dody of Mesa, Arizona, and Gail (Sandy) Dody of Wichita; sister Viola Bernhardt of Duncan, Oklahoma; grandchildren Jeremy Umhay, Maggie Bixler (Mike Hall), Lyndsey (Eric) Molenkamp, Casey Umhay, and Bailey Bixler; and great-grandchildren Rachel, Payton and June.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; brother Don Dody and sister Jean Calaway.

Her funeral service will be at at 11 a.m. Friday, July 15, at First United Methodist Church in El Dorado with the Rev. Andrew Conard and Pastor Mike Bernhardt officiating.

She will have a private family burial at Grant Township Cemetery near Marion.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be directed to Alzheimer’s Association or Interim Hospice in care of Carlson and Kirby-Morris Funeral Homes, 200 S Star St, El Dorado KS 67042.
