Dorothy Helmer

Dorothy Lucille (Haas) Helmer passed Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, at her home in Newton.

Dorothy was born June 7, 1925, to Henry A. and Pauline M. (Reichert) Haas in McPherson County. Dorothy and John V. Helmer were married in 1946 in Marion, Kansas. Dorothy taught Backyard Bible School in Marion, and enjoyed working with her hands, making and painting woodcrafts, crocheting, and quilting. She was a certified nursing assistant, certified medical assistant, and physical therapy assistant for over 25 years at Newton Presbyterian Manor. Dorothy was an active member of Meridian Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school.

Survivors include: daughters, Donna Jean Robertson and husband, Ron, of Kingsport, Tennessee; Verna Lucille Rowe of Newton, Kansas; Roxann and Martin Colborn of Newton, Kansas; Doreen Joy and Byron Hartzler of Wichita, Kansas; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Mae (Haas) Liggett; and nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dorothy is preceded in death by: her parents; siblings, Lillie, Elsie, Reuben, Bernice, and Harvey; her infant son, Steven Duane; and her husband, John.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, at Meridian Baptist Church in Newton. Burial was at Marion Cemetery in Marion.

Memorials in Dorothy’s name can be made to Meridian Baptist Church or Gideon’s Bible Society and can be sent in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, P.O. Box 6, Marion KS 66861.
