Double-passing leads to injury accident

Seven members of a Lincolnville family were injured in a rollover accident Friday after another driver drove onto the left shoulder and lost control while trying to pass both the family’s pickup and another vehicle that already was passing it.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol, a motorist was attempting to pass a 1992 Chevrolet pickup driven by Daisy D. Young, 44, of Lincolnville at 4:24 p.m. two miles south of Lincolnville on U.S. 56/77.

The passing motorist was in the left lane when Calvin J. Arnold, 38, of Fort Worth, Texas, attempted to pass both vehicles by driving his 2006 Ford truck onto the left shoulder, troopers said.

Arnold lost control of his Ford, which struck the Chevy, causing it to roll into the ditch. His Ford also ended up in the ditch. The driver of the other vehicle was able to slow and avoid collision, troopers said.

Passengers in the Chevy pickup were Edwin, 17; William, 16; Benjamin, 12; Allisha, 13; Marcus, 9; and Carl Young, 5, all of Lincolnville.

Edwin, William, and Benjamin were transported to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. The others had possible injuries but were not transported by emergency personnel.

Arnold was not injured.

Troopers reported that all occupants were in safety restraints and that Carl was in a child safety seat.
