Eagles offense overpowers MHS softball team

The Marion High School softball team lost both games Tuesday against Canton Galva.
The Warriors lost the first game, 11-4. All but two Warriors had a hit in the contest. Outfielder Raelene Allen went 2-for-4 with a run. First baseman Sarah Guetersloh went 2-for-3 with a run.
Megan Richmond pitched six innings and recorded three strikeouts.
Marion lost the second game, 18-4.
Left fielder Annie Whitaker opened the first inning with a two-RBI triple that scored JayDee Schafers and Megan Richmond. Second baseman Andrea Norquist singled in Whitaker to give the Warriors their only lead.
Canton-Galva proceeded to hit around their lineup in the first inning, scoring 7 runs.
Whitaker was again the run producer, singling in right fielder Chelsea Voth. The Eagles then scored another seven runs in the second inning to take a 14-4 lead on pitcher Allen. After a quick 1-2-3 inning in the third, the Eagles scored four more runs in the fourth inning before winning the game in five innings.
Warriors drop 2 to Ellinwood
The MHS softball team lost both games to Ellinwood Friday in Ellinwood.
The Warriors lost the first game, 11-1. Megan Richmond started for the first time. In her first outing, she allowed six hits and hit two batters, while striking out six Eagles.
Ellinwood put together 11 runs largely because of six Marion errors. Despite the struggles of her defense, coach Jill Hudson said Richmond only got rattled once during the contest. Hudson took a visit to the mound and the freshman hurler responded with a strikeout.
Chelsea Voth scored the only Warrior run after the Ellinwood second baseman committed an error on a Richmond bunt.
The Warriors lost the second game, 8-7.
It was a good offensive game for Marion, with the Warriors collecting nine hits. Richmond went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Raelene Allen went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Annie Whitaker went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Allen started the second game and recorded eight strikeouts, but the Eagles continued a strong offensive outing by amassing 14 hits in the game. The absence of a regulation fence β the games were played on a baseball diamond β created many triples and doubles for the home team.
The Warriors were up 7-6 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Eagles scored two runs in the final frame including the winning run off an error by a Marion outfielder. Hudson said the defensive miscue was out-of-character for the player and for the Warrior team that had only committed four errors in the second contest.
Voth made a difficult catch earlier in the game when she sprinted from deep left field to catch a pop fly in foul territory between the third base bag and the left-field fence.
βShe covered a lot of territory,β Hudson said.
