Easter Lily

Name just happens to coincide with holiday

Staff writer

She was born Lillian Costello Lundy March 31, 2002 in Marion.

Everyone calls her Lily, which seems appropriate since she was born on Easter.

Funny thing is, Lily’s parents, Bill and Mickey, didn’t name her after the holiday flower.

“We didn’t have Easter in the picture,” Mickey said. “It’s just an old-fashioned name we like.”

The Lundy’s thought not only was Lily a cute and ironic name, but also an easy one.

“We thought it was going to be easy, like the flower,” Mickey said. “Yet it gets misspelled all the time.”

One person who does not misspell it is Lily, although it must have been confusing in pre-school. At the beginning of the year, her teacher would “correct” her name by crossing out Lily and writing “Lillie.”

“Finally we had to write a note saying, ‘It really is Lily’,” Bill said with a laugh.

The misspellings are not that big of a deal to the Lundy’s who are proud of the name they gave their youngest daughter.

However, their oldest daughter, Bridget, a junior at Marion High School, calls her “Phil” just to give her a hard time.

Where did she come up with that name?

“I don’t know,” Lily said with a smile that could light up any room.

She also said her parents call her Lily even when she gets in trouble, and rarely use her full name. Of course, according to Lily, she never gets in trouble. However, her father disagreed.

“Just once a day,” he said with a smile.

Typical youngster

The Marion Elementary School first grader can be found playing softball or basketball, or taking advantage of Marion’s indoor swimming pool.

Bridget, middle child Wiley, and Lily all are members of the Marion swim team.

On rainy days, she probably is inside watching her favorite TV station, Disney.

As evident by her colorful T-shirt, “Hannah Montana” is her show of choice.

“She wants to go to the concert,” Bill said.

The Lundys aren’t sure if that is going to happen, and neither are they sure when Lily’s birthday again will fall on Easter.

Figuring out when Easter will land each year is a job made much easier by just looking at a calendar.

Either way it doesn’t matter to the Lundy’s, especially Lily, who is more concerned with her dog Max, Hannah Montana, and her friends, than the day her birthday falls.

However, Mickey told a story of a banker in the late 1880s who built the house they now live in on North Lincoln and also had a daughter named Lily.

“It’s kind of ironic how it all worked out,” she said.
