Edith Johnson

Edith Ilene Bundy Johnson, 96, passed away Friday in Newton.

She was born March 26, 1924, in Fairmont, Missouri, to parents Ernest and Ethel Bundy.

She graduated from Peabody High School in 1942 and married her high school sweetheart, Harold Johnson, Sr., on Aug. 28, 1942.

Edith developed many friends across the country as she and Harold lived in seven states. These friends, as well as family, could count on receiving a card with cheerful and newsy thoughts, for birthdays, anniversaries and most holidays.

She was a card store’s best friend.

Edith loved to dance, and at one point coaxed Harold to square dance.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Virginia Rose Campbell and Marion Graber; brothers Lewis Bundy and Russell Bundy; and granddaughter Mona Johnson.

Edith is survived by husband Harold Johnson, Sr. of Newton; son Harold, Jr. and wife, Tina of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; daughter Carolyn Johnson and husband, Dennis Kalfas of Citrus Heights, California; son Fred Johnson and wife, Lynette of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; son Alan Johnson and wife, Dee of Phoenix, Arizona; grandsons Trey Johnson, Chad Johnson, Jason Alexander, and David Alexander; and great-grandchildren Jeremy Owenby, Nathaniel Owenby, Jacob Johnson, Isabelle Johnson, Alana Alexander, and Patrick Alexander.

She was a lifelong, devoted member of the Methodist Church, and faithfully attended chapel services where she last resided, at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

The last sunset of her life captured the devotion and love between Edith and her husband

. As the sun was setting, she called Harold to join her at the window and marvel at the beauty of the sunset’s fading light.

We are all spiritually moved at the thought of those two sharing this last moment.
