Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 28

8:38 a.m. — After a deputy sheriff arrived, Marion ambulance helped lift a woman in the 700 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion who reported having a chemical imbalance in her brain. Hillsboro ambulance also responded and took the woman to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center.

12:02 p.m. — As reported last week, Hillsboro, Marion, and Durham firefighters spent nearly 4½ hours battling a fire that destroyed a garage in the 300 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched.

2:38 p.m. — A 58-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

9:17 p.m. — A man who had been choking at a house in the 300 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was checked by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

DEC. 29

8:26 a.m. — An 83-year-old woman sick and unable to get out of bed at a farmhouse near US-56/77 and 210th Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:20 a.m. — An 80-year-old woman with unusually low blood pressure at a house in the 400 block of Cemetery Ln. in Burns was taken to Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital, El Dorado, by Marion ambulance. Burns first responders arrived within seven minutes and provided care until the ambulance arrived 15 minutes later.

3:26 p.m. — A 63-year-old woman who fainted and was not responding normally at a house in the 300 block of S. Adams St. in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:47 p.m. — Marion ambulance went back to the farmhouse near US-56/77 and 210th Rd. to help the uninjured 83-year-old patient get up after falling upon returning from St. Luke. She did not want to be taken back to the hospital.

DEC. 30

11:13 a.m. — A vehicle fire that also damaged a building at Moxie Auto Care and Glass Repair in Hillsboro was extinguished within 11 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters. They continued with mop-up duties until 11:57 a.m. The fire apparently started in the vehicle’s engine, but an exact cause has not yet been determined.

2:07 p.m. — Marion ambulance went back to the farmhouse near US-56/77 and 210th Rd. a third time after the 83-year-old woman there complained of weakness and diarrhea. She again declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:05 p.m. — An intoxicated 48-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

10:36 p.m. — A man who reportedly fell out of a vehicle on US-56 a mile and a half west of K-15 / Bison Rd., hurting his head and back and drifting in and out of consciousness was taken by Hillsboro ambulance on an emergency basis to Wesley. Hillsboro firefighters were called, presumably to set up a landing zone for a helicopter ambulance, but the call for a helicopter was canceled.

10:55 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman described by dispatchers as “not conscious, not breathing, completely normal” in the 600 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to NMC by Marion ambulance.

11:13 p.m. — Durham firefighters sent to check on a carbon monoxide alarm at a farmhouse near the county line on 300th Rd. determined that residents were misreading numbers on a detector.

NEW YEAR’S EVE

5:25 a.m. — A 62-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and having trouble breathing at a house in the 100 block of S. Jefferson Ave. in Lost Springs was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. Lincolnville first responders arrived within 20 minutes and provided care until the ambulance arrived three minutes later.

9:14 a.m. — A 30-year-old man suffering a seizure at a home in the 200 block of N. Walnut St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. It responded instead of the originally dispatched Hillsboro ambulance.

9:57 a.m. — Marion ambulance stood for nearly half an hour while police dealt with an emotionally disturbed man in the 300 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion who took pills, was drinking, and made suicidal comments. The ambulance eventually took him to NMC.

1:10 p.m. — Marion ambulance and Burns first responders were dispatched for an 80-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 300 block of Cincinnati Ave. in Burns, but the woman was not injured, and the call was canceled before anyone arrived.

1:55 p.m. — An 81-year-old man who fell, hit his head, and slipped into an altered state of consciousness at a home in the 600 block of N. Chestnut St. in Peabody was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. It responded instead of the originally dispatched Hillsboro ambulance.

2:07 p.m. — An intentional fire that grew out of control in the Peabody lagoon was extinguished in about an hour by Peabody firefighters.

3:50 p.m. — Tampa ambulance stood by but was not needed while deputies approached a possibly suicidal 14-year-old boy on the roof of a farmhouse near 290th and Falcon Rds.

5:47 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance found no patient when dispatched to a report of a person complaining of whiplash after a wreck at Main St. and Grand Ave. in Hillsboro.

NEW YEAR’S DAY

10:37 a.m. — After a half-hour delay at the hospital, a 62-year-old who suffered a stroke was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to St. Francis.

5:52 p.m. — A 69-year-old man who fell at a duplex on Victory Ln. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

6:58 p.m. — A 63-year-old woman who suffered a stroke was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to St. Francis.

FRIDAY

3:31 a.m. — A 75-year-old man who fell and began sweating and slurring his speech at a farmhouse near 350th Rd. and US-56/77 was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. Marion ambulance arrived almost simultaneously but was not needed.

7:05 a.m. — A 75-year-old man, possibly the same patient just brought in, was diagnosed as having suffered a stroke and transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to St. Francis.

10:19 a.m. — A 91-year-old man who fell at a home in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched, but the call was canceled before it arrived.

3:24 p.m. — A weak but uninjured 75-year-old man who fell at a house near 190th and Jade Rds. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. A Hillsboro first responder was called to fill in for a missing member of the Hillsboro ambulance crew.

6:39 p.m. — A 15-year-old girl who suffered a first-time seizure at the Peabody-Burns High School gymnasium was taken to NMC by Marion ambulance. An ambulance supervisor also responded.

SATURDAY

4:13 a.m. — A 66-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred from St. Luke to Kansas Heart by Hillsboro ambulance, which responded instead of the originally dispatched Marion ambulance.

3:22 p.m. — Marion ambulance attendants, greeted by what they described as “a fairly aggressive dog at the front door,” was called to help lift an unspecified patient at a home in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion. The patient declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:42 p.m. — An 86-year-old man who fell outside a residence on Lakeshore Dr. near Hillcrest Rd. at Marion County Lake declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

SUNDAY

2:42 a.m. — A 79-year-old man who slipped in a bathtub at a home in the 600 block of S. Main St. in Hillsboro was helped up by a Hillsboro ambulance attendants and a Hillsboro first responder. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

12:05 p.m. — Fire at the City of Ramona tree dump was extinguished in less than an hour by Ramona firefighters

1:42 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman with back and abdominal pain at a home in the 200 block of W. 2nd St. in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance.

3:07 a.m. — Marion ambulance transferred an unspecified patient from St. Luke to St. Francis.

3:19 p.m. — A 72-year-old man bleeding from his groin at a home in the 400 block of N. Spruce St. in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by at Hillsboro until 3:43 p.m. in case of additional calls.

5:57 p.m. — A smoky fire in a light switch at Marion Elementary School was extinguished before Marion firefighters arrived. Maintenance workers removed and covered the switch pending repair. Hillsboro and Florence firefighters were dispatched but told they wouldn’t be needed before they arrived. Marion firefighters initially worried that they did not have a fan in case it was needed to clear smoke.

7:04 p.m. — A 69-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to St. Francis.

7:42 p.m. — An intoxicated 66-year-old man on oxygen, throwing up blood while lying on the floor of a home in 400 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion, was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance, filling in for Marion ambulance, which was en route to Wichita.

MONDAY

7 a.m. — A person not breathing at a home in the 400 block of Locust St. in Marion was pronounced dead by Marion ambulance attendants. Hillsboro ambulance, Marion police, and sheriff’s deputies also responded.

7:28 a.m. — Responding from Marion, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to a home in the 300 block of Marie St. in Lehigh to help a 77-year-old woman who fell and could not get up. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:44 a.m. — A 21-month-old boy suffering seizures at a home in the 600 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to NMC by Marion ambulance.

6:35 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman was transferred from HCH to Salina Regional Health Center by Marion ambulance, which took the call instead of Hillsboro ambulance.
