Events plan seeds
of economic development

There were numerous people in Marion this weekend from the Kansas City area, Wichita, Hesston, Halstead, Sedgwick, and, of course, from within the county to take in the garden tour.

Attracting people to Marion for special events may seem like a trivial approach to economic development but actually, it can be quite effective.

In the current economic climate, it is doubtful that Marion will attract any sizable company to relocate here. However, bringing people here for school, social, and sporting events is the next best thing because it gives visitors an opportunity to see our community, planting the seeds of possibilities.

Numerous people have relocated to the area after being in Marion while camping at one of the lakes or attending an event.

When I was on the garden tour Saturday, I heard comments from visitors about how charming our community was and how the garden tour was well worth the drive.

Similar comments were heard at the Art & Music Stroll a couple of weeks ago with one visitor even inquiring about the local housing market.

There will be another opportunity this weekend when the community hosts a car show, antique fair, ice cream social and cakewalk, and movie night. As business owners or managers, it’s important for all of us to welcome our visitors and provide the best service possible to them.

On the subject of the garden tour, I was amazed at the hidden treasures there were in our community. Who knew these backyards looked like this? I have always wanted a special backyard but never knew where to start. After seeing these, I am inspired.
