Everybody needs a Super Bowl

Staff writer

The Super Bowl came and went pretty fast this year. I am sure there was the usual hoopla and hysteria surrounding it, but life was busy, and I didn’t pay too much attention to the contenders until pre-game festivities started.

Once I settled in to watch the game with my family, I realized how nice it was just to forget the rest of the world for a while and hang on to the suspense of the moment, play-by-play, living emotional extremes with the athletes in action.

I admit it, tears actually came to my eyes when I saw the replay of New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree catch that game-winning pass just a few years back, with one hand pinning the ball against his helmet. That was awesome.

The most replayed catch of the day by Mario Manningham in this 2012 Super Bowl was pretty awesome too. The thing that sticks in my mind though, is the picture of his bright red shoes coming down inside the boundary, in slow motion frames. How cool was that!

I enjoyed the Super Bowl this year. I laughed at the commercials, and wasn’t even totally disgusted with the half-time entertainment, like I have been some other years. Madonna was good; the show was nice.

During the game I cheered, I argued, I celebrated, and I moaned about a few mistakes. All-in-all, watching the Super Bowl this year was a great experience.

We all need those times in our lives to experience high and low emotions in ways that do not significantly alter our life path. While I tend to side with the argument that too much money is spent on, for, and around the Super Bowl, and too much time and emphasis is placed on a silly game, this year I enjoyed every minute of it.

The best part for me was seeing the winning snack competition just before game time — it was the tuna-potato cracker topper combination! I make those all the time, usually when there is nothing else in the cupboard to prepare, but don’t tell my family. They love my cooking, and who would think a tuna patty variation could be crowned the best Super Bowl snack of the day! Awesome.
