The biggest news for visitors at Marion Reservoir this year is that the Cottonwood Point campgrounds are being expanded and will be closed at some point.

The expansion will include the addition of an entire new loop of campsites at Cottonwood Point and the construction of a new gatehouse. The new camping loop will include a swimming beach, and each new campsite will have electrical, water, and sewer hookups for recreational vehicles.

Cottonwood Point will be closed during construction of the gatehouse. However, construction isn’t yet scheduled. Park Ranger Traci Robb estimated in April that the campgrounds will be closed for six to eight weeks.

Construction of the new camping loop will not interfere with camping in the existing campgrounds, and there is no construction on Saturdays or Sundays.

Marion Reservoir fishing report

Channel catfish — fair.

Walleye — good, caught off points and along the dam with rattletraps, deep divers, large minnows, and nightcrawlers.

White bass — good, caught along the dam with minnows and mepps spinners.

White crappie — good, caught on minnows in coves.

Wiper — good, caught along the dam with minnows, deep divers, and mepps spinners.

Marion County Park and Lake

Marion County Park and Lake will host Bluegrass at the Lake 2 to 10:30 p.m. June 18 at the beach area. Bands Brightwater Junction and KBA Treblemakers will perform. The stage will be open 2 to 4 p.m., with the best performance winning $100. The event is free, and Marion County Firefighters Association will sell concessions.

Largemouth bass — good, moving toward spawning areas.

Saugeye — fair.

White bass — good, caught on road runners, mepps, and minnows.
