Experience boosts cross-country team

Contributing writer

Heath Goertzen and Nathan Czarnowsky led Goessel High School’s cross-country team last year with several performances under the 20 minute barrier. Both of these runners are juniors.

Seniors Grant Flaming and Dan Smucker will compete for a varsity spot again this year, returning for their final season at the 5-kilometer distance. Ben Wiens and Jake Herrel, both juniors, also lettered last year. These six runners will form the core of the cross-country team this year, with the hopes that several newcomers will add to the success of varsity races.

“Cross-country is much more fun than running circles in track,” Smucker said.

Grant Flaming agreed, “The course at Harvey County West with the bridge and sand made it feel more like a ‘Rambo Run’ than a race on a golf course.”

“I really had no idea what to expect from this boys’ team, but already early in the practices it is encouraging to see underclassmen running with the upper classmen,” first year coach Tyler Schroeder said. “We could have much success.”

Although she has no cross-country experience, Ali Buller may do well in the girls’ division.

Cross-country season begins Aug. 30 at Clearwater.
