Senior citizens who like to frequent farmers markets and roadside produce stands can get up to $30 off purchases through the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
“There is a little paperwork involved,” county Department on Aging head Gayla Ratzlaff said, “but farm market checks are available to any Kansan 60 or older who meets income guidelines.”
Ratzlaff said a household occupied by one senior would qualify with a gross monthly income of $1,832. Two seniors in a household would qualify if their combined gross income were $2,470 or less.
Applications are available at 309 S. 3rd St., Marion. Benefits are awarded on a first come, first served basis. The county has 24 benefits available.
“The vendor must also fill out a form to sign up for the program,” Ratzlaff said. “Participating vendors will be reimbursed for the farm checks they accept.”
Checks in $5 amounts may be used at any qualifying farm market or roadside stand in Kansas for the purchase of nutritious locally grown fruits, vegetables, cut herbs, and local honey for human consumption and not prepared beyond their natural states except for usual harvesting and cleaning.
“Things like jellies and jams, canned goods, baked goods, and plants don’t qualify,” Ratzlaff said.
“Shopping with local vendors is helpful to our economy,” Ratzlaff said. “The program helps both seniors and those in the business of providing wholesome fruits and vegetables.”More information is available (620) 382-3580.
