FFA members attend Greenhand Conference

Members of Marion/Florence FFA attended the South Central District FFA Greenhand Conference Sept. 23 at Buhler High School.

More than 500 first-year members from 25 chapters participated in the leadership conference.

South Central District State FFA officers and national FFA secretary Katie Hale helped conduct events at the conference, which focused on teaching first-year members about opportunities in the FFA and motivating them to become involved in the organization.

Participants also competed in a FFA information contest by taking a test over FFA information and history.

Marion/Florence contestants who placed in the event were Cade Harms, 4th; Taylor May, 5th; and Ezra Darnall 10th.

Other Marion/Florence students attending were Noah Albin, Garrett Alleven, Nathan Baldwin, Austin Cogdill, Peyton Heidebrecht, Jeremy Hett, Daniel Hinton, William Holt, Joseph Legg, Krisde Robinson, Seth Savage, and Bryce Shults.

FFA places 3rd at district land judging contest

Members placed third at the south central district FFA land judging contest Oct. 2.

Centre FFA chapter and Marion County Natural Recourses Conservation Service hosted the contest.

Contestants were required to evaluate six different soil sites for soil properties including soil depth, texture, permeability, erosion, slope, surface runoff, and potential for flooding. Students were required to classify each site into a capability class and make recommended vegetative and mechanical treatments based on the best use for the soil. Two of the sites also were evaluated for their suitability as a home site.

Nick Meyer placed fourth and Clint Kroupa placed eighth individually for Marion.

Morgan Wheeler, Alicia Maloney, and Caitlyn Maloney also competed.

FFA places 2nd at state area land judging

Members of the Marion/Florence FFA chapter placed second at the south central area state land judging contest Saturday.

Fairfield FFA chapter in Reno County hosted the contest.

Nick Meyer placed first and Alicia Maloney placed fifth individually for Marion.

Clint Kroupa and Caitlyn Maloney also competed for Marion.
