Fantastic weather Saturday helped the eighth annual Craig White Fishing Tournament to be the best ever, tournament organizers said.

“We had 30 teams this year and they really hauled in the fish,” Todd Henderson said. He is a member of the Sons of the American Legion and White’s brother.

Teams brought in 116.4 pounds of fish for the weigh-in. Some were released into Peabody Country Club Lake and some became part of the fish fry later in the evening.

The largest fish was an 11.4-pound catfish caught by Michelle Heart of Florence and the smallest was caught by Tim Peterson. It weighed 0.18-pounds.

Mike and Derek Benson took first place with 34.1-pounds of fish. This is the second year the Bensons have taken the top spot.

Michael Hedrick and son Peyton, who caught 12.35 pounds of catfish, won second place.

Following the tournament, there was a meal, drawing for prizes donated by local businesses and individuals, and entertainment by Code Blue, a blues band from Newton.

At 10 p.m. a drawing for top prizes of the day was held. Barbara Raner won a Coleman Tailgate Grill. Robert Turner won a queen-size Kansas City Chiefs quilt, stitched by Lisa Hurst.

“The country club lake was one of Craig’s favorite places,” Henderson said. “Saturday evening was an absolutely perfect end to a great day.

“The money we raised will be used throughout the year to help individuals who are experiencing hardships,” he said. “The tournament gives us a chance to carry on the kind of sharing Craig was famous for.”
