Florence artist displays art

Deborah Hanes-Nelson of Leonardville, formerly of Florence, is the latest guest artist at Gallery 101 in Marion. She was born and raised in Florence, and was part of the last graduating class of Florence High School.

She has been a United Methodist Church pastor for 32 years and has a bachelor’s degree in social work from Washburn University in Topeka and a master’s degree in divinity from Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo.

Without formal training in art, Hanes-Nelson educated herself through workshops, reading, and from fellow artists in Manhattan and Wamego. In 2002, she attended a watercolor workshop in New Mexico and felt a calling to study watercolors more as a spiritual discipline and preparation for retirement.

All of her works on display at Gallery 101 are watercolors, and each includes a scripture passage as a subtitle. Hanes-Nelson’s paintings will be on display for one month.

Hanes-Nelson will be the guest of honor at a “meet the artist” gathering from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.
