It’s the game of the century — the 19th century, to be precise. It will be followed by fireworks packing a more powerful punch than previous years.
Among the entertainment offered by Florence’s 78th annual Labor Day celebration, the vintage baseball game and fireworks show are major crowd-pleasers, planning committee chairman Melvin Honeyfield said.
“The fireworks show will be much larger than the past two years,” he said.
Moving from a class C show to a class B show means more fireworks, bigger fireworks, and bringing in licensed professionals to send the salvos soaring.
Both events will be Sunday night, with the ball game starting at 6 p.m. and the fireworks beginning — as usual — at dusk.
The ball game will coincide with an ice cream social. Snacks such as popcorn, hot dogs, and pickles also will be available.
Weekend festivities start Saturday at 8 a.m. with a scavenger hunt and citywide garage sale. Matt Engels and The Callahan Band provide entertainment Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.
The fun continues to the holiday itself, with a five-kilometer run and one-mile fun run planned for Monday. A parade will be on Main St. at 11 a.m.
Festivities will continue throughout the day.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “restoring the past to preserve the future.”
