Florence community garden receives grant

The Fred Harvey Community Garden of Florence Pride organization has been awarded a $4,104 grant through the Kansas Community Gardens Project, a joint initiative of the Kansas Health Foundation and K-State Research and Extension.

The Fred Harvey Community Garden is one of only 24 community garden projects in the state to receive the funding, which will help support the growth of the garden.

The money is being used to buy needed equipment, such as a garden shed, tools, watering supplies, raised beds, benches, an arbor, and other items for the garden.

In addition to financial help, the grant includes information and assistance to help make the individual garden projects successful community ventures. The children’s garden club meets in the community garden, and visitors to the Harvey House Museum may tour the garden, as well.

The Kansas Community Gardens Project is a three-year initiative, with this year’s recipients representing the first of more than 60 gardens that will eventually join the program.
