CENTRE:   Football on the rebound

Staff writer

The Centre High School football team is hoping to improve on its 2011 record of 4-5 this year. There are 23 students are on the squad.

“We were really young last year,” coach Kelly Steiner said. “We’re a year older and have more experience now.”

Eleven players are returning letter winners. Several are expected to take leading roles this year.

Junior Kyle Methvin will be the quarterback. Senior Justin Deines will play as an end on offense and safety on defense. Junior Houston Svoboda will be a halfback and safety or cornerback. Senior Chad Mueller will be a lineman, and senior Kendall Harding will play fullback.

Additional returning letter winners are Dylan Svitak, Justin Bina, Ty Simons, Tanner Peterson, Dakota Stimpson, and Terren Thompson.

Steiner, who is in his seventh year as coach, said it will be important to stay healthy and avoid injuries.

“In eight-man football every player is essential,” he said.

One of their toughest opponents this year will be Madison, which has won the state championship two consecutive years. But Steiner said every game will be a challenge.

“We’ll have to try to get better every day and show up every week,” he said.

Steiner has an overall record of 28-29. He is assisted by Mark Hager.

“I’m enjoying working with the kids,” he said. “They have good attitudes and are working hard.”
